If you are an educator, a parent of a home schooled child or someone interested in helping their community, consider volunteering to serve on the board of directors for the Home School Cyber School Alliance. The HSCSA is a budding nonprofit that is seeking to provide free and low cost tutoring, text books and other educational materials. We are also looking to provide online classes and certificate courses. These products and services will be provided in an effort to bring a new level of quality and excellence in the educational experience of home schooled and cyber schooled children. You can be a part of it today. Simply go to http://homeschoolcyberschoolalliance.org and click on the teacher's lounge forums. Become a registered user and express your interest on the boards. It's easy and you can make a real difference for children.
Did you know that basic math facts are easily forgotten, especially over the summer break? This is one of the crucial skills to keep practicing with your homeschoolers over the summer and throughout the year. Some kids respond well to flash cards, others like to practice via online games, some do well with worksheets. Some kids hate practicing their math facts (like my son) so they may need a little extra incentive. This could be a reward for a job well done, or make it a game or both. Last year my son delighted in practicing his math facts with me while playing ball at the playground. We would toss the ball back and forth while we practiced. As an added incentive I allowed him to hit me with the ball (like you would in Dodgeball) after he got so many correct in a row. I played it up and we got silly thus adding some fun and craziness to an otherwise daunting but all important task. Anyway we would love to hear your stories about how you practice math facts with your children. Share them in a comment here or visit our forums at homeschoolcyberschoolalliance.org
